Warren Thompson n’en est pas à son coup d’essai. Auteur éminent, spécialiste de la guerre aérienne en Corée depuis plusieurs décennies, il a déjà écrit plusieurs articles ou ouvrages sur ce conflit, y compris pour Osprey. Même si le thème a été traité à plusieurs reprises et sous diverses formes, Osprey ne pouvait pas faire l’impasse sur les Mustang en Corée.

En 1950, les Américains ne juraient que par le jet et le Mustang avait été relégué dans les unités de réserve ou la Garde nationale avec une disparition qui se conjuguait au futur proche. Mais voilà : à cette époque, les jets avaient un rayon d’action assez court, les réacteurs étaient sujets à nombreuses pannes et s’avéraient vulnérables aux tirs venant du sol. L’USAF en tira la conclusion rapide que les jets n’étaient pas toujours les avions les mieux adaptés pour les missions d’appui-sol. L’USAF n’eut pas d’autres choix que de remettre en première ligne le Mustang, lequel avait fait ses preuves en 1944-1945 et au sein de trois Wings. Sans compter les Sud-Africains, Australiens et Coréens, le Mustang reprit du service et mena des missions pendant presque toute la guerre de Corée, au cours de laquelle plus de 200 de ces appareils furent perdus.

Warren Thompson maîtrise parfaitement le sujet et on le ressent bien dans cet ouvrage, rempli de témoignages et de nombreuses photos. Même si cela reste un thème un peu boudé en France du fait de sa spécificité, la guerre de Corée demeure un important sujet de culture générale, et cet Osprey de bonne qualité permet de nous instruire à moindre coût.
