Le Hawker Tempest a en France une image un peu surfaite en raison de Pierre Clostermann qui a terminé la guerre sur cet avion. Le Tempest et sa version Mk V qui a été en service pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale n’a jamais été considérée comme étant le meilleur chasseur de la RAF de la Second Tactical Air Force (2TAF) qui a accompagné les troupes au sol après le Jour-J. Au sein de la 2TAF, sa mission première fut l’appui aux forces terrestres, la chasse n’étant pour lui qu’une mission secondaire, ce dernier rôle ayant prioritairement été dévolu au Spitfire XIV mis en service à la même période. Cette distribution des rôles ne doit rien au hasard, comme le rappelle très bien l’auteur, Chris Thomas qui depuis des décennies a étudié le Typhoon et le Tempest : la RAF a comparé intensivement ses performances avec le Spitfire XIV (et même avec le Mustang III) avant de trancher en faveur du Spitfire quand le Tempest a rejoint le 2TAF à l’automne 1944. En effet, le Spitfire XIV était supérieur au Tempest Mk V en bien des domaines.

Déjà co-auteur des quatre volumes sur la 2TAF chez ‘Classic’, l’auteur connaît donc très bien le sujet. Ce qu’il a écrit dans les livres de la 2TAF sert de base à ce livre et y ajoute de nombreux témoignages et d’informations qui n’avaient pas trouvé de place dans les quatre volumes, comme entre autres la genèse et développement qui sont très bien exposes, ou ses opérations contre les V-1 au sein de l’ADGB*.

Mais le livre ne se contente pas de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, et comme le titre le suggère. La période de l’après-guerre, avec la mise ne service du Mk II et Mk VI, est également traitée en détail sur une quinzaine de pages y compris les escarmouches de 1948-1949 au-dessus du Sinaï. Pour conclure, l’auteur ajoute des annexes détaillant les opérations et tactiques employées par les Tempest de la 2TAF, un ajout somme toute très instructif. Au bout du compte, ce livre, recommandé sans réserve, est un très bon résumé de la carrière du Tempest au sein de la RAF.
