Quel avion ! Le North American XB-70 Valkyrie reste un appareil aux lignes uniques, et pour les yeux une machine vraiment magnifique. Dans ce livre, il n’y a pas que le côté technique qui est abordé, car en fait le XB-70 est l’aboutissement de la politique du bombardement stratégique choisie par les Américains au cours des années trente. Le XB-70 ne peut être bien compris que si l’on prend en compte l’environnement de l’époque, militaire, politique et industriel, mais aussi l’expérience accumulée sur une quinzaine d’années depuis la Seconde Guerre mondiale dans le domaine du bombardement stratégique. Peter Davies l’explique très bien et de manière synthétique. Deux personnages ont joué un rôle déterminant dans le projet XB-70 : le général Curtis LeMay, son plus grand défenseur, et Robert McNamara, de l’administration Kennedy, son plus grand détracteur. Mais ce qui sera surtout fatal au XB-70 sera l’arrivée des missiles balistiques.

Bien sûr, la plus grande partie du livre est consacrée au développement et aux essais en vol du XB-70, un défi technique et technologique à l’époque, car faire voler un avion d’une telle masse à Mach 3 est alors à la limite de science-fiction : tous les problèmes ne seront pas résolus par ailleurs.

Même si il est le témoin de l’ère nucléaire et d’une vision apocalyptique de la fin du monde telle qu’elle était entrevue dans les années soixante, on ne peut que se dire en terminant ce livre et en me répétant… Quel avion !
